It is the combination of a strong concept and the attention to details that forms the architecture.

Old and new

The existing walls from the old barn wraps around the new house like a ruin. The walls shield the wind from Samsø's open fields and provides fantastic intimate outdoor spaces for living and recreation.

The existing old barn offered obvious qualities that we wanted to preserve and highlight together with the construction of the new house. The materiality of the barn's old walls contrasts with the new black-painted wooden house - and the interaction between new and old highlights the best of each other.

The poetry emerges from the cohesion of old and new - past and present - this is where the most interesting spaces derive from.

Concept

The concept is inspired by a babushka doll. Converted to architecture, the brick walls from the old barn protect the intimate outdoor spaces around the new wooden house. You thus get a surprise when you approach the place. At first you only glimpse the new building, and when you step behind the walls, you discover a whole new world, where new and old create very special spaces.

When doing projects of transformation we search for existing qualities and cultivate them, so that history becomes an integrated part of the architecture.
